Curriculum
Maria Francesca Costabile has been full professor of human-computer interaction at the Computer Science Department of the University of Bari, Italy, since 2000. She retired on January 1st, 2025. Together with some young collaborators of her, she founded the IVU (Interaction Visualization Usability & UX) Lab and was the director until Dec. 2024. Formerly, she worked at the University of Calabria, Italy, as researcher with a CNR fellowship from 1978 to 1980 and as assistant professor from 1981 to 1988; then, she was associate professor at the University of Bari from 1989 to 1999.
She carried out research in various Italian and foreign universities. The longer periods of research at foreign institutes were at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, NY, USA, the University of Munster, Germany, the University of Bonn, Germany, the University of Houston, TX, USA, the University of Pittsburgh, PA, USA.
She received research funds from many Italian and foreign organizations.
Her research interests while she was working at the University of Bari were in human-computer interaction, in particular interaction design, mobile systems, usability engineering, UX, information visualization, end-user development, usable security, human-centred artificial intelligence. She has published more than three hundred papers in scientific journals, books and proceedings of international conferences, and edited seven conference proceedings, published by ACM Press and Springer.
Prof. Costabile has been regularly in program committees of international conferences and workshops. In 1992, with Stefano Levialdi and Tiziana Catarci of Sapienza University of Rome, she conceived and organized the workshop on “Avanced Visual Interfaces” (AVI), the first international event on HCI issues promoted in Italy by computer scientists. It was so successful that they decided to organize it again. Since then, the AVI conferences are held every two years and have become well appreciated by the international community. The proceedings are publshed by ACM Press and are available in the ACM Digital Library. She was also Co-Chair of the Program Committee in the editions of 1996 and 1998, General Chair of the 2004 edition held in Gallipoli (LE) and of the 2016 edition held in Bari, and was in the Steering Committee for several years.
She started the Italian Chapter of ACM SIGCHI, called ACM SIGCHI Italy, and served as first Chair from 1996 to 2000. In February 1999, Maria Francesca Costabile and Fabio Paternò (of ISTI-CNR, PISA) conceived the idea and organised HCITALY’99, the first Italian conference organized by ACM SIGCHI ITALY, whose purpose was to bring together both scientific and industrial communities with interests in HCI. The conference were largely successful, emphasising the increasing importance of HCI in Italy. Since then, SIGCHI Italy Conferences (now called CHItaly) are held every 2 years.
She was Program Co-Chair of IFIP INTERACT 2005, Program Co-Chair of CHI 2008 (the most important international conference on HCI), General Co-Chair of IS-EUD 2011. She has also been in the Steering Committee of VL/HCC, the IEEE Symposium on Visual Languages and Human-Centric Computing.
She is Life Senior Member of IEEE and Member of ACM. In 2018 she has been awarded the ACM SIGCHI Lifetime Service Award. In 2024 she has been awarded the Lifetime Service Award by the AVI and SIGCHI-Italy Community. In 2025 she has been awarded the IFIP Pioneer Award.
