Curriculum
Maria Francesca Costabile has been full professor of human-computer interaction at the Computer Science Department of the University of Bari, Italy, since 2000. She retired on January 1st, 2025. She founded the IVU (Interaction Visualization Usability & UX) Lab and was the director until Dec. 2024. Formerly, she worked as assistant professor at the University of Calabria, Italy from 1981 to 1988, and as associate professor at the University of Bari from 1989 to 1999.
She carried out research in various Italian and foreign universities. The longer periods of research at foreign institutes were at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, NY, USA, the University of Munster, Germany, the University of Bonn, Germany, the University of Houston, TX, USA, the University of Pittsburgh, PA, USA.
She received research funds from many Italian and foreign organizations.
Her research interests while she was working at the University of Bari were in human-computer interaction, in particular interaction design, mobile systems, usability engineering, UX, information visualization, end-user development, usable security, human-centred artificial intelligence. She has published more than two hundred papers in scientific journals, books and proceedings of international conferences, and edited seven books, published by ACM Press and Springer.
Prof. Costabile has been regularly in program committees of international conferences and workshops. She has been General Chair of AVI 2016, General Co-Chair of IS-EUD 2011, Program Co-Chair of CHI 2008 (the most important international conference on HCI), Program Co-Chair of INTERACT 2005, Program Chair of AVI 2004. She as been in the Steering Committee of the Advanced Visual Interfaces Conference (AVI), organized every two years in cooperation with ACM SIGCHI. She has also been in the Steering Committee of VL/HCC, the IEEE Symposium on Visual Languages and Human-Centric Computing.
She is senior member of IEEE and member of ACM. She started the Italian Chapter of ACM SIGCHI, and served as first Chair from 1996 to 2000.
In 2018 she got the ACM SIGCHI Lifetime Service Award.
