Curriculum
Carmelo Ardito is assistant professor at the Computer Science Department of the University of Bari Aldo Moro, where he teaches courses for the Computer Science curricula.
He got the PhD in Computer Science discussing the thesis titled “Interaction with Mobile Devices in Multimodal and Pervasive Scenarios”.
His research interests are in Human-Computer Interaction. At the IVU Lab, he coordinates the research on "Novel Interaction Techniques and
Pervasive Systems" in particular applied to the Cultural Heritage domain. Several interactive systems have been developed, such as an m-learning system running
on smartphones to support the visit to an archaeological park, whose architectural framework is the core of the patent n. 1401512 (see, for example [1]). Other systems are
designed for large interactive displays and, more recently, for exploiting the possibilities offered by the Internet of Things technology. Tools that allow Cultural Heritage experts to create by themselves interactive experiences to be offered to visitors have been created.
Carmelo Ardito is co-author more than 80 papers published in journals, international conferences and collections. He has supervised many theses in Computer Science.
Since 2001 he has been involved in various research projects of the Department of Computer Science (De_VISU, VICE, Stressafish, CHAT, DIPIS, Learning for All, LOGIN, VINCENTE) sponsored by EU and Italian organizations.
In the frame of the Erasmus-IP EU programme, in 2013 and 2014 he has been responsible, for the University of Bari, of the management of the SURGEOM (SUbject-driven Role-Guided Externalization of Organizational Models) project. The final goal of SURGEOM was the organization of a two-week summer school, in which he also participated as teacher. Both the editions of the school were attended by 40 students coming from 6 European countries. The coordinator of the SURGEOM project was the Johannes Kepler University of Linz (Austria), which also hosted the event.
He has been visiting researcher/professor at several international research laboratories, including: the Helsinki Institute for Information and Technology, working on interactive public displays (Finland, February-May 2007); the HCI
group of the University of Patras, working on games for visiting cultural heritage sites (Greece, June 2010); the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, working on pervasive games for museum visit (Trondheim, Norway, June
2012); School of Digital Technologies of Tallinn University, giving a course on "Technologies and Methodologies for End-User Development" within the PhD programme (Estonia, May 2014); DEI Interactive Systems Group of the University
Carlos III, working on designing smart objects (Leganes, Spain, June-July 2017); Cyprus Interaction Laboratory, giving a course on "End-User Development and Creativity in the Design of Interactive Systems with Arduino Technology" within
the PhD programme (Cyprus University of Technology, Limassol, May 2017); Brunel University (London, UK, July 2017) and University of Hertfordshire (Hatfield, UK, February-March 2018) studying innovative techniques to interact with
pervasive systems in the domain of Cultural Heritage.
Carmelo Ardito has been member of the scientific organization committee of several International Conferences: Demo co-chair at the ACM international conference on Interaction Design and Children (IDC) 2009; Workshop &
Panel co-chair at the biannual conference of the Italian SIGCHI Chapter (CHItaly) 2013; Poster and Demo co-chair at the ACM international conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces (AVI) 2014;
Full Paper co-chair at the International Symposium on End-User Development (IS-EUD) 2015; Short Paper co-chair at AVI 2016; Program co-chair at CHItaly 2017.
He will be Poster co-chair at INTERACT 2019 and Technical co-chair at INTERACT 2021.
He also co-organized the following workshops: "DEG: Involving End Users and
Domain Experts in Design of Educational Games" in conjunction with IS-EUD 2011
and "SERVE: Smart Ecosystems cReation by Visual dEsign" in conjunction with AVI
2016.
He has been Associate Chair for CSCW 2018, CHI 2018, as well as for NordiCHI (2012 and 2014 editions). He is also in the reviewer board of several international journals (ToCHI, IJHCS, IJHCI, IWC, JSS, JVLC, JSS, UAIS, MTAP).
He is (has been) reviewer of numerous International Conference, including AVI,
CHI, CSCW, INTERACT, MobileHCI, TEI, UbiComp, VL/HCC.
Carmelo Ardito has been member of three COST Actions: 294 MAUSE "Towards the MAturation of Information Technology USability Evaluation", IC0904 TwinTide "ToWards INtegration of Trans-sectorial IT Design and Evaluation", IC1303 AAPELE “Algorithms, Architectures and Platforms for Enhanced Living Environments”.
He is currently Management Committee substitute for the COST
Action CA16226 SHELDON “Indoor living space improvement: Smart Habitat for the
Elderly” and member of the CA16105 enetCollect "European Network
for Combining Language Learning with Crowdsourcing Techniques".
He is Expert Member of IFIP TC13 (International Federation for Information Processing Technical Committee on Human–Computer Interaction); member of the IFIP IoT Domain Committee; member of the IFIP TC13 Working Group 13.2 "Methodologies for User-Centered Systems Design"; member of ACM SIGCHI Italy.
